Midwinter, also known as Yule, is the celebration of returning light. In the deepest darkness, the seed of new life is born. It is a time of rest, warmth, and hope.

Candles, evergreens, and fire symbolize the slowly returning light. Many people create a Yule log or light candles for protection and good fortune.

Wishes for the New Year
Many traditions involve writing wishes for the coming year. These are kept, burned, or buried as a symbol of new growth.

• a drop of oil
